With her gone he was finally able to concentrate, and managed to get his final pieces of copy completed. Hank was busy getting the first pages into print, watching over the machine carefully to make sure the huge sheets of paper didn’t snag. They had just a few hours to get the last pages printed, then each sheet cut to size, and the bundles of papers bound and ready to go to the newspaper boys around town. Jared was just blocking the type for Hank for his last pieces when Susannah returned. “How was your tea?” he asked politely, she had a rosy glow to her cheeks, and had obviously enjoyed her afternoon.

“Most interesting,” she said thoughtfully.

“How so?”

“Well, it was just the usual kind of afternoon tea, nothing particularly exciting to report.” Jared looked at her, worry written all over his face. She had an entire page to fill. “The most peculiar thing was, he sounded a lot like the man I met on the train – you know the one I wrote that murder mystery tale about?” she said casually. Jared suddenly felt his entire body go cold to match his spine. He had assumed the man in that story had been a creation full of Susannah’s imagination. No, he had known that he was real. Everyone she had written about in that little notebook of hers had been caricatured with her acerbic wit, and immaculate attention to detail. He had always known that he was real, just tried to kid himself that he was safe. That his family would be safe. That she would be safe.

“He wasn’t made-up?” he asked trying to sound as nonchalant as he could manage.

“Oh his deeds were, but no he was very real. He was on the train with us all the way from New York. He kept himself distant from everyone as if he thought himself better than the rest of us, but there was something about him that drew the eye. Of course that could have been the exquisite cut
